The Great Gatsby is a problematic film. I think it got a lot of stuff right, but also the film got a lot of stuff wrong…but more due to the difficulty of translating the book to film. I don’t know that you can have a great version of The Great Gatsby that captures all the nuances of the book. Good review. Many of my own thoughts. I actually quite enjoyed the film, knowing it would be melodramatic, and hyper real. But I agree, I just wish sometimes he’d have let the actors do the work (which they were doing admirably), and the audience be allowed to work out what was happening, rather than have it spoon fed with a giant, diamond covered ladle. Having been written in the years leading up to the Great Depression, and being re-adapted now in the years following a new period of economic turbulence, The Great Gatsby remains such a rich thematic text because of the reverberating truths it has to share about the glories and inevitable follies of the American (now global) capitalistic

"The Great Gatsby" may be a bad film but it is by no means a complete disaster and in a weird way, that may be its biggest failing. If a film as wildly ambitious as this cannot be a complete success, it should at least have the grace to be the kind of total failure that sears itself into mind of anyone who encounters it so that they never forget that it existed.
